After looking to improve network reliability and reduce the cost of managing their own data center infrastructure, OceanX used Megaport’s Network as a Service (NaaS) to modernize and extend their internal network into multiple clouds to improve network performance, affordability, and scalability.

Challenges

Moving on-prem data center infrastructure to the cloud

For many years, OceanX used on-premises data center infrastructure in California and North Carolina to power their fulfillment-as-a-service solution, call center, and business intelligence platform.

Unfortunately, their infrastructure became very expensive to maintain. They also had occasional issues with data center reliability that would adversely affect the business. That’s when they started looking to modernize their network by migrating their business-critical infrastructure into the cloud.

“Before, if we lost power for an extended period of time or if we lost internet connection, we’d be pretty much out of business,” said Chris Ostman, Senior Manager, Infrastructure and Operations, OceanX. “Being able to move everything up into the cloud allowed us to be more robust, and allowed our business to grow, because it’s very easy to scale up into the cloud environment as well.”

Solution

A multicloud solution built for resiliency

After starting out in CenturyLink Cloud, OceanX eventually migrated to AWS to support their fulfillment and call center business, and then added Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to enable their real-time business intelligence and analytics platform, using Oracle Database Exadata Cloud Service. By using Megaport Cloud Router (MCR) to connect their on-premises data centers to AWS and OCI, OceanX was able to bring multiple clouds into their network for greater reliability, control, and affordability.

Benefits

“Can’t even think of a Megaport outage”

The first and most important benefit of using Megaport, according to Reece, is the service’s reliability. While OceanX has had to deal with occasional issues with their local internet circuits and even network connectivity with their public clouds, with Megaport, OceanX has been able to “just set it and forget it.”

“Honestly, I can’t even think of a Megaport outage,” said Reece. “The speed is always what it’s advertised to be. I’ve never, ever encountered a bottleneck. It’s just solid.”

Reece also said that compared to manually setting up direct connections to public clouds and setting up all the BGP peering on a router, using Megaport to establish those same connections in just “three or four clicks” is less cumbersome and saves man hours.

“I’m a network engineer by trade and I find [Megaport] not too limiting,” Reece said. “For less network-focused IT professionals, they can get their way through the connectivity process fairly easily. I would say it’s very user friendly.”

Using Megaport Cloud Router as a network hub

OceanX uses Megaport Cloud Router to both connect their cloud environments together and connect the clouds to their on-premises infrastructure.

“Just like you could buy a virtual machine or a virtual server in the cloud, [MCR] is like buying a virtual router,” said Reece. “We’re kind of using [MCR] as a hub with the spokes being AWS, Oracle, and our on-prem locations via our existing MPLS circuits. It’s akin to a core router for the network.”

Future Plans for OceanX

Currently doing an Oracle migration, OceanX has been using a number of Virtual Cross Connects (VXCs) to facilitate the data transfer, and plans to continue using Megaport services in the foreseeable future.
