Megaport’s Top Causes to Support This Festive Season
Feeling the giving spirit these holidays? Here are the causes Megaport supported in 2021 to give you some ideas.
From mental health research to supporting children, our Megaporters rallied together for some wonderful causes in 2021. Here are our charity highlights from the year to share the festive spirit, and inspire you with some ideas on how you can give back this season.
North America: Toys for Tots
The holiday season is a time of celebration for most. But with 11 million children in the United States living in poverty, not everyone has a reason to celebrate. Marine Toys for Tots works to distribute new toys as gifts to these children, helping to bring back the magic of the holiday season.
This year, Megaport and Netrality Data Centers partnered for a Season of Magic event, where we donated a toy to Toys for Tots on behalf of every attendee. We also joined forces with Netrality for the 12 Days of Giving initiative, where for 12 days we encouraged donations for Toys for Tots to purchase and supply even more toys. Thanks to the generous donations of many, we were able to raise a total of USD$2,540, well exceeding our goal of USD$2,000.
Australia: R U OK?
A conversation could change a life. R U OK? helps Australians spot the signs that someone’s mental health might be suffering, and offers helpful advice on how to connect with them in a way that can have a positive impact.
September 9 was the organization’s annual R U OK? Day – an annual reminder that asking others if they’re okay, or starting a conversation about mental health, can potentially save a life.
To bring Megaporters together for R U OK Day?, the Brisbane team enjoyed a barbecue breakfast in the office, featuring an inspiring mental health talk from Australian Football League (AFL) player Simon Black.
Australia: Black Dog Institute
In any given year, one in five of us will experience symptoms of mental illness, and about 60 percent of those people won’t seek help. Black Dog Institute’s mission is to change that, and one of their biggest initiatives of the year is their One Foot Forward challenge, where individuals and teams can pledge a number of kilometers they’re going to run, walk, or cycle in the month of October to raise funds for mental health research.
A group of 12 employees banded together to enter the One Foot Forward challenge as team Megaport, covering a massive 691 kilometers throughout October. And thanks to Megaport’s pledge to match every dollar raised by our runners, walkers, and cyclists, we were able to raise a massive AUD$15,962, placing Megaport 22nd out of over 970 companies for our fundraising efforts!
North America: The Build-A-Hand Program
At Megaport’s Sales Kickoff in North America, the team built a total of 14 prosthetic hands to be donated to amputees around the world who cannot afford prosthetic devices. The team building event was part of The Build-A-Hand Program, a program of virtual, in-person, and hybrid events that have funded over 60,000 prosthetic hands, which have been built and donated to recipients in more than 80 countries.
Global: Christmas donations
For Christmas 2021, Megaport donated AUD$50 per employee to the following children’s charities as nominated by each region:
- Australia & Asia-Pacific: Children’s Hospital Foundation
- America: St Jude Children’s Research Hospital
- Europe: Barnados
In addition to the $50 per employee donated by Megaport, the Brisbane team was also invited to donate to a toy drive which was delivered to Children’s Hospital Foundation.
If you’re feeling charitable this festive season, we hope these initiatives inspire you with some ideas. Thank you to everyone who contributed time or money to our fundraising efforts in 2021!
