Introducing Megaport IPsec Tunnels

By Cameron Daniel, Chief Technology Offier

Protect your network traffic from cloud, edge, or branch with Megaport’s new IPsec add-on for Megaport Cloud Router.

If you’re managing a network across public cloud, private cloud, branch offices, disaster recovery sites, or remote endpoints, you’ve probably asked the question: How can I secure this entire environment without adding more hardware or complexity?

Now, there’s a new way to secure your environment end-to-end with Megaport, with the introduction of IPsec Tunnels for Megaport Cloud Router (MCR). This new add-on feature brings simple, flexible encryption to Megaport’s global private SDN, without needing a physical Port.

Whether you’re connecting from the edge or between clouds, this makes secure, scalable connectivity faster than ever.

Why IPsec tunnels?

Enterprises are growing more distributed. Teams, data, and applications live everywhere, and so do the threats. Encryption over public and private networks is essential, but the solutions out there aren’t always easy to integrate. Complex edge hardware, vendor-specific configurations, and long deployment timelines can slow you down.

We wanted to make it faster and easier – so we built IPsec right into MCR.

This is one of many feature additions we’ve recently built into this highly flexible Megaport solution, including packet filtering and bandwidth of up to 100G.

With this new IPsec add-on, you can establish fully encrypted tunnels from virtually any location—a branch office, remote user, or even another cloud—directly into your Megaport network. You can do this without needing to deploy a Port, provisioning new edge gear, or relying on third-party VPN hubs.

How it works

Megaport’s IPsec tunnels are deployed and managed directly through the Megaport Portal. If you’re familiar with provisioning VXCs, the experience is nearly identical.

You’ll be able to:

  • set up tunnels in under 60 seconds
  • terminate tunnels directly on your MCR
  • secure traffic over public internet or private connectivity
  • use familiar packet and route filtering controls
  • support up to 10 Gbps per MCR, depending on configuration and algorithms.

Tunnels are sold in packs of 10, starting at $100 per month. You can add them to any new or existing MCR in your environment.

Network benefits

IPsec for MCR gives you greater security and agility, without adding complexity or cost.

🔐 Portless encryption

No Port? No problem. Use encrypted tunnels over any transport—even the public internet—to reach your cloud services or data centers.

🌩️ Simplified multicloud

Secure traffic across multiple cloud providers and regions without adding hardware or third-party services.

🏢 Secure your branches

Connect your branch offices, retail sites, or partner networks with encrypted tunnels, without relying on carrier-grade MPLS or dedicated VPN devices.

💥 Disaster recovery and remote access

Spin up encrypted connectivity to a secondary cloud region or disaster recovery site in just a few clicks – fast, flexible, and ready when you need it.

And because it’s part of MCR, IPsec gives you consistent routing, traffic engineering, and filtering, so you keep full control over your network.

Who IPsec tunnels are for

If you’re a network architect, IT manager, or cloud engineer, IPsec for MCR is built for you if you’re looking for:

  • a low-friction way to extend encryption across your hybrid or multicloud environments
  • secure connectivity from places where a Port isn’t available or practical
  • a way to eliminate vendor lock-in on edge VPN appliances.

IPsec is baked into Megaport’s software-defined fabric, designed to give you more security without more gear. It’s fast, flexible, and built for how modern networks actually work.
