Introducing Megaport High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption

Introducing Megaport High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption

By Cameron Daniel, Chief Technology Officer

Secure cloud traffic at line rate, without slowing your workloads down, thanks to Megaport’s new encryption solution.

Securing data in motion is often a trade-off between performance and privacy, but most traditional encryption models struggle to find this balance – especially when you’re moving large volumes of data between clouds or across regions.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption, a new way to protect your cloud traffic with high throughput, minimal latency, and hardware-level data protection.

This isn’t typical software encryption bolted on to your setup. This new solution delivers MACsec at line rate across the Megaport network fabric, delivering fully encrypted connectivity at speeds up to 100 Gbps without slowing your applications down.

Why Megaport High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption?

Enterprises are no longer choosing a single cloud provider; they’re optimizing across multiple clouds. This means more organizations are running performance-sensitive workloads across multiple cloud providers, replicating data between regions, and building distributed architectures that need fast, reliable, and secure connectivity.

Traditional IP-based encryption often introduces performance bottlenecks as throughput scales, especially when traffic crosses public infrastructure or shared network segments. High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption solves this issue.

By using MACsec—a hardware-based line-rate encryption standard—High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption protects traffic at the Ethernet layer. This keeps your data in motion secure by default, no matter where it’s headed, without having to sacrifice throughput.

How High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption works

Our encryption solution plugs directly into your existing network setup and runs across supported paths on our global network fabric.

Order and configure your connection through the Megaport Portal or with help from our team.

2. Enable MACsec on endpoints

Activate MACsec on the supported network and cloud interconnect endpoints you’re using. This switches on hardware-based encryption that secures your Ethernet traffic with no impact on performance.

3. Connect encrypted paths

Once enabled, traffic between those endpoints is encrypted at line rate—up to 100 Gbps—across the Megaport network.

Benefits of High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption

Security without compromise

MACsec operates at the data link layer, shielding traffic from eavesdropping and tampering while it’s in motion. This is especially valuable when traffic traverses third-party or public infrastructure segments.

High performance at scale

Unlike solutions that throttle performance as encryption workload increases, line-rate hardware encryption preserves throughput and keeps latency low.

Integrated with your network fabric

High-speed Cross-Cloud Encryption works alongside your existing Megaport interconnects and cloud setups, so you don’t need to rip and replace your network design or cloud connections.

Cloud and vendor neutral

Encrypt data in motion across 1000 + global enabled locations and 410+ service providers, as well as private clouds and hybrid environments.

Simplified operations

Manage encrypted connections the same way you manage other Megaport services, through our Portal or API. There’s no separate key management service to build and maintain unless you choose to.

How you can use High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption

  • Multicloud replication: Keep data in sync across providers while protecting it in transit.
  • Intercloud application traffic: Secure communication between services running in different cloud environments.
  • Performance-sensitive workloads: Protect AI/ML training, analytics, and real-time systems that can’t tolerate throughput degradation.
  • Hybrid and private cloud connectivity: Link on-premises systems with cloud environments without redesigning your network stack.
  • Compliance and data governance: Meet regulatory requirements around encryption at rest and in motion.

Start securing your traffic

Security shouldn’t come at the cost of performance. By using Megaport High-Speed Cross-Cloud Encryption, you can protect your data in motion at the speeds your workloads demand.

Whether you’re replicating data across continents or connecting distributed applications across clouds, you’ll get a reliable, scalable, and easy-to-manage way to keep your traffic secure.
