High Score: Megaport Hits 1,000 Locations

High Score: Megaport Hits 1,000 Locations

By Cameron Daniel, Chief Technology Offier

To celebrate one of our biggest milestones so far, we reflect on the journey we've taken to get here alongside our incredible partners and customers.

Megaport has just hit a milestone that has been over a decade in the making: 1,000 Megaport-enabled locations worldwide. This achievement is more than just a nice, round number – it means Megaport is now available in 10% of all data centers globally. In this industry, that’s a massive deal.

This milestone is a signal of just how far we’ve come – and how much more is possible when you build the right technology, with the right people, at the right time. And we couldn’t have done it without you.

Back to the beginning

When we started Megaport back in its (very) early days—2013, to be exact—we were a tight crew with a big idea. Our founder Bevan Slattery had this vision for a better, faster, more agile way to connect businesses to the networks and cloud services that they relied on. And we were all-hands-on-deck to bring this vision to life.

The early days of a new startup are scrappy, uncertain, and incredibly fun. You form unbreakable friendships, and get through most days on coffee and adrenaline. Megaport was no exception.

We worked out of a small office in Fortitude Valley, just around the corner from our Megaport HQ location today. We had plastic Bunnings trestle tables for desks (Aussies know), a handful of switches, and a shared belief that we could shake up the networking world. Late nights were the norm. We were eating Guzman y Gomez at our desks, pulling cables, writing code, and trying to build something that didn’t exist at the time: flexible connectivity that worked like the cloud.

Fast forward to today and I’m amazed to see how far we’ve come. Megaport is now a publicly listed company on the Australian Securities Exchange, we’re active in 26 countries worldwide, and now, we’ve also enabled over 1,000 locations. (I’m still eating Guzman at my desk.)

But none of this happened in a vacuum – it was only possible thanks to the many incredible partners that joined us on our journey, as well as the customers and team that believed in our vision over the years.

A thanks from the CEO, Michael Reid

Reaching 1,000 locations is a massive moment, not just for us, but for every customer and partner that’s been part of the journey.

This milestone means more access. More coverage. More ways to connect. Customers can now get to the services they need, in more places, faster and easier than ever. That’s the power of our global fabric.

For our partners, it opens up new opportunities to deliver value, wherever their customers are. Whether you’re in a major hub or an emerging edge location, Megaport is right there with you.

To everyone who’s helped build our global network, and who is currently building with us: Thank you. This is your milestone, too.

We’re not slowing down, and I can’t wait to see how we grow together in the future. Our plans are big, but our partners are even bigger.

Game on!

Why partners like DataBank are celebrating too

A word from Tim Glatz, Interconnection Product Manager at DataBank

The team at DataBank was excited to play a pretty special role in this milestone – our San Diego SAN1 facility was Megaport’s 1,000th site plug-in.

DataBank connects more than 60% of the US population, and combining our presence with Megaport’s reach is a force multiplier for us. When you’re working with a network provider that’s in over a thousand locations, it unlocks levels of flexibility and speed for our customers that we couldn’t offer from anyone else.

Whether they need to connect to the cloud, peer between regions, or move workloads across different environments, Megaport makes it simple for them. And the support and reliability that comes with an established, proven partner helps us win and keep business.

What’s next? Game on

1,000 is our current high score, but it’s not the final one. We’re still expanding to new cities, in new countries, alongside new partners. We’re chasing a future where connecting to the cloud is as easy as clicking a button, no matter where in the world you are. From all of us to our partners and customers: Thank you for building with us.

And if you’re wondering where we are right now, you can explore our 1,000 sites on our Megaport Enabled Locations tool. It’s the best way to see how close your next connection could be.

If you’re in a celebratory mood (and I hope you are), check out the retro side-scroller game we built just for this milestone. It’s our way of tipping our hat to the early days of tinkering, coding, and pushing the boundaries (and we just really love retro games).

High score unlocked. Game on!
