A BIRD in the hand

Megaport has selected BIRD to perform the route server function for our Internet Exchanges. Each IX will be supported by two redundant route servers operating locally in each city.

BIRD allows us tremendous flexibility in the way we filter and distribute BGP routes between peers. One important feature is the ability to remove its own AS number from the path of forwarded BGP routes – shortening the path so our peers can get the most out of their port.

Our route servers will also support BGP communities to allow each peer to set individual export policy, allowing per-peer control over route prepending and exporting. Using the secondary option for BIRD, peers can still see available routes even if the best route is filtered.
