How to Build a Cybersecurity Culture in Your Business

How do you maintain a healthy immune system? Not by living in continual fear of illness, or forever consulting doctors (although that may be comforting to some), but by pursuing wellness – fitness, nutrition, and physical and mental balance. Likewise, in business, the goal is not simply to be reactive—to keep responding to problems as they appear—but to proactively develop and execute strategies that prevent these problems from occurring in the first place. This is particularly important for IT and cybersecurity teams as, by the time a problem appears, it can often be too late. Is your business approaching IT with a cybercrime mindset, where problems are to be feared? Or with a security-first mindset, where you focus on integrating best practices for improving the safety of your data? In this blog, we examine how IT teams can cultivate security best practices throughout the wider business and facilitate a culture shift from reactive to proactive.

What is VLAN tagging? There are two types of ports on network switches. Most vendors use terms such as “Trunk Port” and “Access Port” to differentiate them. Access ports define a port where a single VLAN ID is carried whereas Trunk ports carry traffic destined for multiple VLANs. Trunk Ports require a policy to determine which traffic is to be sent within which VLAN identifier. For these purposes, a technical standard defining VLAN tagging 802.1q was developed. These VLAN tags contains information such as VLAN ID and other information that is specified by the 802.1q standard.

Architecture The software stack was designed to be modular, allowing us to easily add and remove layers while maintaining a consistent customer experience. One of the key points here for the technical team was to add a layer of abstraction between the network equipment and the management software. Initially this means we’re not locked in to a specific vendor but longer term it means that even moving to a new technology like OpenFlow can be achieved by adding a new module at the Agents layer while the rest of the stack remains the same. As can be seen in the stack, the Megaportal and our phone apps are all dependent on the RESTful API to talk to our backend systems. The intention here is that we use the same interface and mechanisms internally that we expose to customers.
